Effects of Adenotonsillectomy on Children with Asthma
Prospective Controlled Study<=

This is an additional study that our practice will collaboratively wo=
rk
with the Department of Pediatric Pulmonary to complete the study. The purpose of the study is to det=
ermine
if the intervention of adenotonsillectomy, which provides improvemen=
t in
the upper airway of children, may in turn lead to improvement of the lower
airways of children especially those with bronchial asthma. The prior studies have demonstrate=
d improvement in asthma as evidenced=
by a
decrease in the child’s asthma severity score, decrease in asthma
medication use, and less missed school days, etc. Those studies only studied childre=
n who
were undergoing adenotonsillectomy.
In this study we will have the opportunity to include a control grou=
p of
children (those who will not have their tonsils and adenoids out). There will be 2 groups of patients=
. The study group will be pediatric =
patients,
ages 2 years – 18 years, with the diagnosis of Asthma, undergoing
elective Adenotonsillectomy. =
The
control group will be pediatric patients, ages 2 years – 18 years, wi=
th
the diagnosis of Asthma. We w=
ill
study the children at the time of study entry (or before surgery) and 12 mo=
nths
later. Adding a control group=
to
this study will help us gather solid data about children with asthma and the
role of adenotonsillectomy.
