What is Otolaryngology?
Otolaryngology (pronounced oh/toe/lair/in/goll/oh/jee) is a specialty pertaining to the medical and surgical management of patients with disorders of the ear, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck. The specialty is commonly referred to as ENT or Ear, Nose and Throat specialty. Pediatric Otolaryngology cares for the ENT needs of children exclusively.
Pediatric Otolaryngology encompasses a variety of areas pertaining to the ear, nose, throat and head and neck of children. Some of these areas include:
Ears: hearing loss (conductive and neurosensory), ear infections, foreign body to the ear, traumatic injury to the ear, congenital malformation of the ear with reconstruction, balance disorders.
Nose: Sinus disease, chronic nasal congestion, nasal obstruction, enlargement of adenoids or nasal turbinates, septal deviations, nasal fractures.
Throat: Airway management and reconstruction, tracheostomy, laryngomalcia, disorders of the tonsils, throat infections, swallow disorders, foreign body in airway or esophagus, laryngeal clefts/fistulas.
Head and Neck: Disorders of lymph nodes, salivary gland disorders, cysts/fistulas, tumors, parotid disorders, thyroid disease, craniofacial malformations.
**In addition to the list above, pediatric otolaryngology encompasses the care of children with communication disorders, developmental delays, tumors of the head and neck, congenital malformations of the head and neck, premature infants as well as children other complex medical needs.
